HOW TO HANG A LARGE HEAVY PICTURE
For large, heavy pictures or mirrors, the hooks and devices sold in hardware or craft stores may not be sufficient.  Here are some steps for safely hanging your art or mirrors.
*Make sure the wire is securely fastened to the back of the frame.
*Locate 2 studs in your wall closet to the desired location.  Measure from the floor up and mark.
*Drill screws into both wall studs, setting them out from the wall a few turns to accommodate the wire.
*Don’t worry if the studs are not located exactly where you’d like to hang your picture.  Simply raise by a couple of inches the screw that is in the direction you want to move the picture.  Feel free to experiment a time or two to find the best placement for the higher screw.  The extra holes will be covered by the picture.
*Work with a partner to hang the picture, each person holding the wire toward the wall to make sure it catches on the screws properly before allowing the full weight of the picture to come to rest.

Woodruff-Tucker Home…$199,500

January 13th, 2012

Woodruff-Tucker

The Woodruff-Tucker House

168 Natchez Street

Woodville  MS  39669

The Woodruff-Tucker Home has long been associated with significant families and local history ever since it was built in 1876 . . the second of only two surviving Greek Revival structures in the Woodville National Register Historic District.  It has been well cared for throughout its life and in recent years has been lovingly restored by its present owners.  It has been in his family for over fifty years.  Cosmetic repairs continue in the main four rooms but the rest of the structure is sound and in move-in condition.

Exterior Back

There are several distinctive architectural features which add enormously to the charm of this four room with wide center hall floor plan; among them the two unique side wings, a low front gallery with full length windows,  and the unusually steep hip roof with four  high chimneys topped by Terra-cotta pots.  The interior has fifteen foot ceilings, huge windows and great natural light, and a wonderful enclosed rear gallery/den.  Many of the original details such as heart pine floors, original mantels, and plaster moldings are very special.

Living Room

The home is set on a huge one and a half acre lot which slopes down from Natchez Street on the east to Sligo Street on the west. The sloping lot allows for a two story rear with a lower floor with unfinished rooms and exciting potential for expansion.

Woodville is a delightful early Mississippi town set around a court house square and with over 240 homes and sites on the Register.  The entire town is within walking distance of its shops, museums, and businesses.

The gardens have come alive with waterfalls, endless natural trails, fish ponds and walking paths…

January 10th, 2012

Walter Place

Welcome to Walter Place… The home was built by Harvey Washington Walter in 1857 and it was designed by a local architect, Spires Boling, as a classic Greek Revival house but his unique touch was to add massive medieval Gothic towers with castellated battlements to each end of the house . . a look that is distinctive to this day to Walter Place.

Side Gardens

When Holly Springs was captured by Union forces in 1862 Gen. Ulysses S. Grant commandeered Walter Place to be a residence for his wife and son and her slave.

After the War it became a hospital for the Yellow Fever Epidemic that swept the area in 1878 taking with it Col. Walter and three of his sons.

His youngest daughter Irene however married an immensely wealthy entrepreneur and shoe manufacturer, Oscar Johnson, and Walter Place began a second exciting chapter.

Master Stair

In 1903 Irene and Oscar Johnson hired another famous architect, Theodore Link, the architect of the then new Mississippi Capitol  and they acquired two additional neighboring “cottages” . . the 1834 Featherston Place and the 1836 Polk Place . .to add to their homeplace.

To tie it all together they hired George Kessler who had been designing noted city parks in Indianapolis, Kansas City, and Memphis to design a forty acre botanical park and create their paradise.

Family Room

Today Walter Place fronts on W Chulahoma Avenue one of the main downtown streets in Holly Springs while Featherston Place and Polk Place are both on South Craft Street with the formal entrance to the gardens in between.

Irene Walter and Oscar Johnson had style and they lavished their attentions on their project and restored Featherston Place and Polk Place . . both noted for their English style with basements that provided relief from the stifling summer heat.

The Johnsons lived at Walter Place when they weren’t in New York or Paris or the Hamptons.  It was the Gilded Age and Walter Place prospered.   It was furnished and filled with appropriate art and antique furnishings.

He had a railroad car, lots of friends and family, and life was glamorous

Japanese Pavillion

However Oscar died in 1916 and the home-place went into a long sleep.

In 1983 the current owners bought and rescued Walter Place, they also bought back the two houses that had been sold, as well as fifteen acres of the gardens and began an award winning restoration.

Original furnishings were returned to Walter Place and the house with its sixteen foot ceilings was filled with appropriate furniture, mirrors, chandeliers, and historical memorabilia.

The gardens have come alive with waterfalls, endless natural trails, fish ponds and walking paths.

Household Tricks and Tips!

Prevent Clogs in Your Kitchen Sink!
If you’ve ever had a clogged kitchen sink, you know how disruptive it can be.
You can prevent clogs by observing these practices:

1. Run the garbage disposal long enough to hear it change speed once the food hasgone through the disposal. Continue to run the water into the disposal for 10 seconds to make sure all ground  food is pushed beyond the P-trap.2. Don’t overload the garbage disposal. Plumbers make numerous house calls at Thanksgiving to unclog sinks with loads of potato peels jammed in them.Egg shells are another problem, since they break into small, flat pieces that are too large to go through the drain holes in the disposal, but not high enough to be  reached by the moving parts that break food up.

How to Fix Doorknob Holes in Walls!
*You can permanently fix doorknob holes in your walls by turning an ordinary piece of wallboard into a custom patch with a built-in flap.
*First, cut out all crumbling wall material and square off the hole.
*Next, cut a piece of wallboard so it’s larger than the hole by about 2″ all the way around.
*Measure the hole, and draw an equivalent square on your wallboard patch. Create the flap by scoring and carefully removing everything but the wallboard paper outside the plug part of the patch.
*Place joint compound, or” mud”, onto both the flap and the hole, and fit the patch into the hole, smoothing the edges down with a wide-bladed putty knife.  Add very thin layers of mud over the patch and onto the wall for a smooth transition.  Add texture with a brush or your fingers.
*When it’s dry, sand lightly and paint.
